Enjoying Solitude: Things to Do If You Don’t Like Spending Time Alone

One thing’s for sure and that is that everybody feels differently about spending time alone – some love it, others hate it. But the fact of the matter is, regardless of how sociable you are and how many friends you have, we all need to be okay with spending time on our own. Not only is it unavoidable, but it’s also actually really good for you to be comfortable with and to enjoy your own company.

But what if you find it boring? If you’re an extrovert, the thought of spending a whole day or evening alone doing something like meditating or playing games may seem terrible. But the truth is, it really doesn’t have to be. Once you’re happy and comfortable being on your own, you’d be shocked at how much you can get done – or, how nice it can be to simply do nothing at all!

So, if you’re somebody who doesn’t like spending time alone and you don’t know what to do with yourself, here are some things you can do to help yourself enjoy spending time alone.

Pick Up a Hobby

For the creatives among us, alone time may be the perfect opportunity to get back into a fun hobby you may enjoy – something like drawing, painting or crafting. But the good news is, even if you don’t perceive yourself as being a naturally creative person, anybody can create. Whether you’re making something for a purpose or simply for the sake of it, there’s benefit in simply enjoying the process.

It doesn’t have to be creative – simply find something that you enjoy and reward yourself with time to do it. It may be playing games, watching sport or combining the two and keeping up to date with golf betting odds. Whatever it is that tickles your fancy, allow yourself to have some fun when you’re on your own.

Move Your Body

The benefits of movement and exercise simply cannot be overstated. Moving is something to do for yourself, to keep healthy, and it’s a great way to be good to yourself and your body.

So, if you’re alone and you’re feeling at a loss for what to do, why not go for a walk or a jog or whatever else you may enjoy? Reward your body with exercise and your mind will thank you.

Put Your Thoughts into Writing

For some of us, being alone means facing your thoughts, and that can be scary. But one way to face that fear is to take it head on – write down how you’re feeling, what may be bothering you or simply what’s going on in your life. That way, alone time can be an opportunity for self-reflection.

Accomplish the Mundane

Doing the boring things – like running errands or washing dishes – isn’t exactly fun, but getting them done can give you a great sense of accomplishment. So, use your alone time to accomplish the mundane things you need to do, and you’ll soon realise that sometimes, being alone makes you powerful, efficient and productive.
