What is Wellness?

The World Health Organisation defines wellness as “a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”.  The Cambridge Dictionary defines it as “the state of being healthy”.

Many experts have put forward various types of dimensions of wellness.

Emotional Wellness

This has to do with thoughts and feelings.  This dimension will enable you to recognise and deal with positive and negative feelings.  This involves adjusting to various life changes, stress and difficult circumstances.  There are various ways that you can improve your emotional wellness.  Keeping an optimistic outlook on life and rather focusing on positive things will help.  Understanding and accepting all your various emotions; even if they are bad.  Always remember to smile and remember to keep a good balance between work and your personal life.  Sleep is an important part of maintaining emotional wellness and you should always make it a priority.  Remember that there is nothing wrong with seeking professional help.

Spiritual Wellness

This dimension has to do with finding the purpose and meaning in your life.  Religion, prayer and various forms of meditation can achieve this.  It is also about evaluating your morals and beliefs.  To enjoy a healthy spiritual wellness you may want to join a religion or try yoga and meditation.  Forgiving those that have wronged you can be very freeing.  Looking and exploring whom you are and exploring things that interest you.  Learning to accept who you are, as well as who others are.

Physical Wellness

This dimension involves being physically health by eating a well-balanced diet, doing regular exercise and by practicing self-control.  Try to introduce a regular exercise plan of around 30 minutes each day.  Ensure that you have well-balanced meals in correct proportions.  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so always endeavour to start your day with it.  Make sure that you have regular physicals with your doctor.

Intellectual Wellness

This dimension involves taking part in activities that are mentally stimulating and that can challenge you. To do this you can commit to learning new things each day and by trying new things.  A great way to do this is to travel and learn about the world and its vast and varied cultures.  New hobbies are a great way to stimulate your mind and even playing real money pokies can help.  It is also exciting to learn new languages and use them on your travels.  Why not try learning how to play a musical instrument and explore your creative side.  Maybe do some online studying or try reading new fiction and non-fiction books.

These are just a few wellness dimensions.  Wellness is an important part of life as it has the ability to impact so many areas.  Life can be challenging and being healthy and happy goes a long way to coping with the many challenges that life can throw at you.  Even though there are things beyond your control having a positive outlook and by controlling the things you can, will enable you to cope better.
